Save Earth, Plant Trees

  • 2013

The simple act of planting a tree benefits the environment in many ways — from filtering air pollution to reducing soil erosion, creating shade and helping recycle water. As part of our Focus Green program, Alliance took on the challenge of planting a tree at as many Alliance communities as possible.

The Goal: Celebrate Earth Day and make a positive impact on the environment by planting trees at Alliance communities nationwide.

The Work: Alliance’s Directors of Facilities, Regional Managers and on-site teams solicited donations of native trees from landscaping vendors, which were then planted at our communities as part of an Earth Day resident event.

The Results: We planted 159 trees, which will absorb an estimated 7,632 pounds of CO2 and intercept approximately 55,650 gallons of storm water runoff annually. Communities that weren’t able to participate by planting trees due to unique property characteristics helped celebrate Earth Day in a number of different ways.  Several chose to support the Nature Conservancy’s “Plant a Billion Trees” campaign, which is working to preserve Brazil’s endangered Atlantic Forest by planting one billion trees by 2015. These Alliance communities encouraged their residents to support the cause and were able to raise enough money to plant 340 trees. Other properties celebrated by cleaning trash in their local communities, installing energy-efficient light bulbs and low-flow shower heads in each apartment, and handing out reusable shopping bags to their residents.
